When winter weather really sets in, a good waterproof jacket makes all the difference. 3-layer waterproofs are designed for serious outdoor use, combining a waterproof outer fabric, breathable membrane and protective inner layer into one durable construction. The result is a jacket that offers excellent waterproof protection, breathability and durability without the bulk of a traditional lining. We often refer to waterproof jackets as Shell, so think of it as your shell, your protection. UNder your shell you can vary your layering to meet the needs of the day and your chosen activity, but it is your shell that will protect you.

Our top choices include the Mountain Equipment Makalu for men and the Rab Namche for men and women, both feature dependable 3-layer GORE-TEX epe protection. If you’re looking for the benefits of a 3-layer jacket at a more accessible price, take a look at the Montane Norste XT for or the Rab Firewall, both using 3-layer Pertex Shield technology. Whichever you choose, these are jackets designed to keep you protected when the weather is at its worst.

If you’re looking for a winter waterproof, it’s also worth considering Páramo, which takes a very different approach to keeping you dry. Páramo doesn’t use a conventional waterproof membrane; instead, its Nikwax Analogy® system uses a two-layer construction, with an inner Pump Liner® actively moving liquid moisture away from your body while the outer fabric deflects wind and rain. This directional approach can be particularly effective in the cold, wet and humid conditions we experience in the UK, helping to keep you comfortable during long days outdoors. Páramo jackets are also warm, durable and designed to be maintained and reproofed with Nikwax, making them a great alternative to a traditional membrane waterproof.

A little extra care goes a long way: Modern fluorocarbon-free waterproof garments need regular washing and reproofing to maintain their performance.
