An Outstanding Birthday Walk

G: Moderate

£: £5

Date:Saturday 23rd

Start:Cardingmill Valley

Come celebrate one of Britain’s finest landscapes on its 60th birthday of becoming an area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB). A walk exploring hedgerow riches, ghosts and witches, curious tales and views of Wales. Party hats and poppers optional. Free Shropshire Hills AONB guidebook to all participants.

This will be a birthday party to remember as we explore the western side of the Long Mynd. This is a full commitment kind of do, no popping off early to relieve the baby sitter. You’re in for the long haul and a fairly challenging walk. The quicker we walk the more time we’ll have to relax at the two pubs on the route.

All good parties start with bubbly, and this is no different as we follow the tumbling stream up through Carding Mill Valley past the frothing splendour of Lightspout waterfall. Giddy then, we’ll be treated to unfolding views as we go on to Shooting Box and a break for drinks and nibbles. For lunch we’ll visit The Bridges, via the delightful Darnford Brook. The food is excellent, but there’s also plenty of room for picnicking.

From here, our way lies over Adstone Hill discovering a land nestled between the craggy peaks of the Stiperstones and rolling heights of the Mynd (with great views of both). Wentnor is the last point of interest, discovering its ancient hedgerows, haunted moors and hurricane gravestones (plus refreshments at the Crown if time allows). The return trip climbs back to the Mynd over Pole Bank then passes Boiling Well and down the stunning Cow Ridge back to the valley. Those in search of nightcaps may need to go on into Stretton, as with all good parties we may get back quite late, and the staff at the tea room may have gone home (the National Trust Café closes at 5pm). Still, there’s plenty of places for a last whet before home in Church Stretton.

This substantial walk will take a leisurely 6-7 hours. Although a lot of the walk is easy-going, there are several steep sections; walking poles are recommended.

A great way to celebrate AONB's 60th Birthday! Details to follow.
